Cocoa Beach

High speed photography is probably one of the most difficult types of photography to master. It seems like the subject is there one second but as you press the shutter, it’s completely gone. To get the timing and tracking right, what better way to practice than at an air show! The pictures in this post are all from the 2012 Cocoa Beach Air Show. The air show consisted of all kinds of aerobatic flying and demonstrations by the Coast Guard and Army.

These airplanes were really flying fast, even in the bright Florida sun, a fast shutter speed and stopped down aperture, many of my shots were still blurry. The problem is tracking the airplanes while still giving the sense of speed (i.e. blurring the background). The pictures above were a few of the ones that turned out for the better, with the exception of the F-18 which was blurry, but I’ll be honest, that thing was going supersonic and the shockwave only lasted a split second.
